Botox for TMJ Symptoms + Jaw Clenching
Reduce Overactive Jaw-Muscle Contraction.

A targeted masseter treatment for selected patients with jaw clenching, grinding and muscle-related jaw tension.

Clenching and grinding can place substantial repetitive load on the jaw muscles. In selected patients, an overactive masseter muscle is an important part of that pattern.

Neuromodulator treatment can temporarily reduce selected masseter activity. The goal is to decrease excessive muscular contraction while preserving the strength needed for normal chewing and jaw function.

Jaw Muscle Overactivity

Clenching, grinding and TMJ symptoms are not all the same problem.

The masseter is one of the major muscles used for chewing and jaw closure. Repetitive clenching or grinding can make this muscle work excessively.

Some patients describe jaw tightness, fatigue, tenderness or other symptoms around the jaw. However, TMJ/TMD symptoms can have multiple muscular, dental and joint-related causes.

That distinction matters. Neuromodulator treatment targets selected muscle activity; it does not diagnose or correct every cause of temporomandibular disorder.

Jaw Clenching + Muscle-Related Tension

When the masseter is working harder than it needs to.

The treatment starts by identifying whether excessive jaw-muscle activity appears to be part of the patient's concern rather than assuming every jaw symptom is caused by the masseter.

01 - Clenching

Jaw Clenching

Repeated forceful jaw closure can keep the masseters highly active and may contribute to a tight, tired or overworked feeling.

02 - Grinding

Teeth Grinding + Bruxism

Grinding can involve repetitive jaw-muscle activity, but dental evaluation may also be important because tooth wear and bruxism have multiple contributing factors.

03 - Symptoms

TMJ / TMD Symptoms

Jaw discomfort, clicking, locking or limited movement can arise from different structures. Muscle-directed injections are only one possible component of care in selected patients.

Your Treatment At Bolus

We treat the muscle pattern, not the acronym.

“TMJ” is often used as a catch-all term for jaw symptoms. Before considering injections, we evaluate the masseters, symptoms, movement pattern and treatment goals to determine whether a muscle-directed approach is reasonable.

01 - Evaluate

Assess The Jaw Muscles

We evaluate masseter size, symmetry, contraction and the relationship between your symptoms and jaw-muscle activity.

02 - Differentiate

Look Beyond The Masseter

Symptoms suggesting a primarily dental, joint or other cause may require evaluation outside a cosmetic neuromodulator treatment plan.

03 - Treat

Reduce Excessive Activity

When appropriate, treatment is individualized to reduce excessive contraction without unnecessarily weakening normal jaw function.

Functional Intent vs Facial Slimming

The same muscle can be treated for a different reason.

Jaw clenching treatment and aesthetic jaw slimming both involve the masseter, but the treatment goals are different.

This page focuses on excessive jaw-muscle activity and related symptoms in appropriately selected patients. If your primary concern is a wide or square lower face caused by enlarged masseters, explore our dedicated Jaw Slimming page.

What Botox Can + Cannot Address

Muscle-directed treatment has limits.

Appropriate expectations matter. Reducing masseter activity may help selected patients whose symptoms are meaningfully influenced by muscular overactivity, but it is not a universal treatment for every jaw complaint.

Muscle Overactivity

Selected masseter activity is the component most directly addressed with neuromodulator treatment.

Joint + Structural Problems

Neuromodulators do not repair the temporomandibular joint, reposition a displaced disc or correct dental and skeletal causes of jaw dysfunction.

Comprehensive Evaluation

Persistent locking, significant limitation of motion, dental damage or symptoms suggesting another cause may warrant dental or medical evaluation.

Treatment Investment

Typical Jaw Clenching + Masseter Botox investment.

Exact investment depends on masseter size, anatomy, asymmetry, muscle activity, product and individualized dose.
Candidacy + Safety

Jaw-muscle treatment requires thoughtful dosing.

The masseter is important for chewing. Appropriate dosing and patient selection are essential when the treatment goal is to reduce excessive activity without compromising normal function.

Tell us before treatment if you...

Are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding; have a neuromuscular disorder; have significant chewing or swallowing difficulty; have had prior botulinum toxin complications; or have an active infection in the treatment area.

Potential risks

Temporary redness, swelling, tenderness or bruising may occur. Other risks include asymmetry, chewing weakness, changes in smile mechanics or lower-face contour, unwanted muscle weakness and rare spread-of-toxin effects.

Jaw Clenching + TMJ Symptoms FAQ

Common questions about Masseter Botox for jaw-muscle overactivity.

Can Botox help jaw clenching?

In selected patients, reducing excessive masseter activity may decrease the muscular force involved in clenching. Whether treatment is appropriate depends on the cause of the patient's symptoms and clinical evaluation.

Can Botox help teeth grinding or bruxism?

Masseter treatment may reduce selected jaw-muscle activity associated with grinding, but bruxism can have multiple contributing factors and may also require dental evaluation or other management.

Is Botox approved specifically to treat TMJ disorders?

Botulinum toxin treatment for TMD/TMJ-related symptoms is generally an off-label use. Treatment does not diagnose or correct every cause of temporomandibular disorder.

Does Botox repair the TMJ?

No. Neuromodulator treatment changes selected muscle activity. It does not repair the joint, reposition a disc, correct bite problems or treat every structural cause of jaw symptoms.

How much does Jaw Clenching / Masseter Botox cost?

Typical treatment at Bolus is approximately $450–$800. Exact investment depends on muscle size, anatomy, asymmetry, product and individualized dose.

Will Masseter Botox also slim my jaw?

It can. Repeated reduction in masseter activity may decrease muscle bulk over time, so some patients notice a slimmer lower-face contour even when their primary treatment goal is excessive clenching.

How long does treatment last?

Neuromodulator effects are temporary and commonly last several months. Individual response, muscle strength and treatment history can affect duration.
