Jowls + Skin Laxity • Elkridge / Columbia, Maryland

Jowls are not
just loose skin.

Collagen loss. Facial fat shift. Bone support. Skin laxity. Platysma activity. The jawline changes because several layers change.

A softer jawline can come from skin laxity, descending facial tissue, volume redistribution, chin or jawline structure, platysma activity, or a combination. That is why a single “skin tightening” treatment cannot solve every jowl.

Bolus evaluates the lower face as a system, then chooses the smallest number of treatments needed to improve contour naturally.

Bolus rule: tighten skin when laxity is the problem, restore support when structure is the problem, and avoid overfilling a lower face that really needs collagen remodeling or surgical evaluation.
Skin • Fat • Support • Muscle
Define the cause.
Then define the jawline.

Lower-face aging is rarely one-dimensional.

The Jawline Reality

Skin tightening cannot replace skeletal support. Filler cannot shrink loose skin. Neuromodulator cannot lift heavy tissue.

Each option has a different job. Better contour comes from matching the treatment to the anatomy.

The Jowl Map

Four common contributors to a less defined jawline.

01

Skin Laxity

Loss of collagen and elastin can create a softer, looser lower face and neck.

02

Volume Shift

Facial fat compartments change with age, which can deepen folds and contribute to jowling.

03

Structural Support

Chin projection and jawline structure influence how sharply the lower face is framed.

04

Platysma Activity

Downward pull from the platysma can contribute to loss of jawline definition in selected patients.

Treatment Logic

Match the treatment to the layer.

Biostimulatory + Structural Support

Sculptra, Radiesse or hyaluronic-acid filler may be considered when facial support, contour or collagen stimulation is part of the plan.

Neuromodulator

Selected platysma or lower-face treatment may refine downward muscle pull, but it does not replace missing support or remove lax skin.

The Bolus Lower-Face Toolbox

Not every jowl needs filler — and not every lax face needs a device.

RF Microneedling

Collagen-focused treatment when skin laxity and texture are meaningful contributors to the lower-face concern.

Sculptra

Biostimulatory treatment may be used strategically when broader collagen support and facial volume quality are part of the plan.

Radiesse

Selected diluted or structural uses may support collagen and contour goals depending on anatomy and treatment plan.

Dermal Filler

May improve chin or jawline support when skeletal proportion or localized volume loss contributes to contour. Explore Dermal Fillers →

Neuromodulator

Can be considered for platysma and selected lower-face muscle activity when downward pull contributes to jawline blurring.

Surgical Referral

When tissue descent or laxity is too advanced for a meaningful nonsurgical result, surgical evaluation may be the most appropriate recommendation.

What To Expect

Lower-face treatment should be proportional to the anatomy.

01

Assess

We evaluate laxity, chin projection, jawline support, facial volume, platysma activity and overall facial proportions.

02

Prioritize

We identify the layer most responsible for the concern rather than automatically filling or tightening everything.

03

Treat

The plan may use collagen stimulation, filler, neuromodulator or a combination depending on the anatomy.

04

Recover

Downtime varies from mild injection swelling or bruising to short-term redness and swelling after RF microneedling.

05

Reassess

Lower-face contour often looks best when correction is staged and reassessed rather than overdone in one visit.

Not Sure If You Need Tightening, Filler Or Both?

Jowls + Skin Laxity FAQs

Before choosing a tightening treatment.

What causes jowls?

Jowls can reflect skin laxity, facial fat shift, changing bone support, chin and jawline proportions, platysma activity, or a combination.

Can RF microneedling tighten jowls?

RF microneedling may improve collagen remodeling and mild-to-moderate laxity in selected patients, but it does not replace surgery when tissue descent is advanced.

Can filler improve jowls?

Filler can improve support in selected areas such as the chin or jawline, but simply filling around a jowl is not always the best strategy.

Can Botox improve the jawline?

Neuromodulator may help selected platysma or lower-face muscle activity, but it does not remove loose skin or restore structural support.

When is surgery a better choice?

When skin laxity and tissue descent are substantial enough that nonsurgical treatment is unlikely to create a meaningful result, surgical evaluation may be more appropriate.
