How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

At its core, laser hair removal is fairly self‑explanatory. Kill the hair follicle and stunt future growth. We do that with a medical laser that will penetrate safely without damaging the skin. However, as someone who has had laser hair removal or has at least read up on it, you probably already know there’s more to it than that.

Laser hair removal uses highly-concentrated beams of light from a laser to “kill” hair follicles. The “killing” of these hair follicles prevents hair from regrowing, effectively giving you smooth, hair-free skin that doesn’t require regular shaving, waxing, or plucking.

Laser hair removal can be done on virtually any part of the body where unwanted hair grows—upper lip, underarms, legs, bikini, chest, arms—you name it, and there’s a good chance we’ve done it. The full hollywood brazilian followed by under arms are the two most popular treated areas at Bolus Med Spa.

Learn About The Hair Growth Cycle

The hair growth cycle is a complex process, but understanding it can help to understand the laser hair removal process. In a nut shell all three phases of the hair follicle is present at any given time. BUT, the older, mature hair follicles (anagen phase) are the main ones to respond to the laser. This is why it is important to stay on a schedule with a minimum of six treatments.

Anagen: The anagen phase is the growth cycle of hair. It is during this phase that LHR is most effective. This is because, during the anagen phase, hair is visible on the skin’s surface, moving heat down the strand and into the hair follicle.

Catagen: The catagen stage is a transitional phase of the hair cycle, during which the hair follicle shrinks and the hair shaft detaches from the blood supply. This stage typically lasts for 2-3 weeks, and during this time, LHR will not be as effective because the hair itself is already dead.

Telogen: Although it is most effective when the hair is in the active growth phase, known as the anagen stage, it can also be used on hair in the resting phase, known as telogen.

Please understand that the hair follicle grows in different stages, but only responds to the laser during one of those phases. We don't know which phase is which, so it is important to stay consistent with the timing in order to “kill” the hair follicle.

Is Laser Hair Removal Safe?

YES! Laser hair removal is safe for all skin types when using the right laser and a trained provider! Whether your skin is Black/African, Middle Eastern, Indian/Asian, or Caucasian....Laser hair removal is a very safe procedure, but choose your clinic and provider carefully without focusing on price! Trying to save a few dollars up front will likely cost you a lot more money and time in the long run. Medical lasers are NOT CHEAP, so how in the world are you getting that price? Use common sense when doing your research.

At Bolus we primarily use the DEKA MOTUS and BARE HR, for safe, fast, effective hair removal. Often times we use both in the same visit to get you results!

*Make sure the provider has experience with YOUR SKIN COLOR and has the appropriate laser to do the job. The providers Bolus Med Spa are experts treating all skin of color.

We take every precaution to ensure that you are safe and comfortable throughout your entire procedure and offer a variety of the best medical lasers that will be safe for your skin tone and color.

Of course, though, as with any cosmetic procedure, there are always some risks to be aware of, including skin irritation, changes to the pigment of your skin, and blistering. We will go over all before and aftercare with you to ensure that you have the best results possible.

In addition, it’s always important to disclose your medical history to your technician prior to undergoing any cosmetic procedure.

Whether you’re searching for laser hair reduction, Maryland facial fillers, or Moxi near me, your safety is always our priority.

How Many Laser Hair Removal Treatments Will I Need?

Everyone needs to start with at least 6-9 treatments. If you cannot follow the schedule, then it is best to wait to start until you can consistently do the treatment plan.

Everyone may need touchups, however that may vary from person to person. There are a number of factors that cause hair to grow. We are humans and our DNA is programmed to grow hair. Believe it or not it does serve a purpose. Other factors include, hormones, health problems, medications, sun exposure, lifestyle, diet, stress, tolerance to the optimal laser energy, skin and hair color.
