Glutathione
Glutathione is naturally produced by the body and plays an important role in antioxidant defense, cellular redox balance and several metabolic pathways.
At Bolus Med Spa, glutathione is administered intravenously after clinical assessment and screening. We also believe patients deserve realistic expectations about what glutathione can and cannot do.
Your body already uses it.
Glutathione is a naturally occurring tripeptide found throughout human cells. It participates in antioxidant defense and helps maintain cellular redox balance.
Intravenous administration should not be confused with a guarantee of improved health, lighter skin or a specific subjective feeling.
Glutathione is part of your body's antioxidant system.
The scientific interest in glutathione comes from what it already does physiologically rather than from wellness marketing claims.
Redox Balance
Glutathione participates in antioxidant reactions and serves as a cofactor for enzymes involved in controlling oxidative stress.
Enzyme Support
Glutathione participates in several cellular pathways, including reactions involving glutathione peroxidases and glutathione transferases.
Metabolic Processing
Glutathione participates in endogenous pathways involved in processing reactive compounds and maintaining cellular homeostasis.
You may have heard that glutathione lightens skin.
There is more to that story.
What the research suggests
Glutathione has biological relationships with melanogenesis, and studies of some routes of administration have reported variable effects on melanin and skin brightness.
That does not establish intravenous glutathione as a reliably effective cosmetic treatment for hyperpigmentation or skin lightening.
How Bolus approaches pigmentation
We do not position glutathione as our primary treatment for melasma, brown spots or hyperpigmentation.
If brighter and more even-looking skin is the real goal, we want to evaluate why the pigmentation is occurring and address the skin itself.
Depending on the concern, customized skincare, chemical peels, MOXI and other pigment-directed treatments may provide a more targeted strategy.

A 2 gram option for patients for whom this dose is clinically appropriate after assessment.
A brief treatment still deserves medical oversight.
Glutathione is administered after appropriate clinical assessment and screening.
Assessment
Relevant medical history, current symptoms, medications, allergies and treatment goals are reviewed before treatment.
Vital Signs
Clinical screening may include temperature and vital signs when appropriate.
Not A Sick Clinic
Bolus does not provide wellness treatment to patients presenting with fever, active vomiting or symptoms requiring urgent medical evaluation.
Clinical Judgment
If assessment identifies an abnormality or concern, treatment may be deferred and the patient may be referred to primary care, urgent care or another appropriate setting.

Skin Brightness + Pigmentation
If the real concern is melasma, brown spots, uneven tone or hyperpigmentation, we may recommend evaluating the pigmentation directly.

Glutathione biology is real. Cosmetic claims require context.
Glutathione is well established as part of normal human antioxidant and redox biology. Evidence supporting intravenous glutathione for cosmetic skin lightening is substantially less established.
Glutathione + Antioxidant Function
Scientific literature describes glutathione as an important endogenous antioxidant involved in redox regulation and cellular protection.

Published reviews have examined oral, topical and intravenous glutathione for pigmentation. Evidence varies considerably by route of administration, and intravenous cosmetic use remains inadequately established.

Reviews of cosmetic glutathione use have raised concerns about the limited safety and efficacy evidence available for intravenous administration specifically for skin lightening.

What is glutathione?
Glutathione is a naturally occurring tripeptide produced by the body. It participates in antioxidant defense, cellular redox balance and multiple enzyme systems.
How does Bolus administer glutathione?
At Bolus Med Spa, glutathione is administered intravenously as a slow IV administration after appropriate clinical assessment and screening.
Is this the same as sitting for a full IV infusion?
No. Glutathione administration is generally much shorter than a traditional IV fluid infusion. Appointment time also includes clinical assessment, IV access and appropriate observation.
Will glutathione lighten my skin?
We do not promise or market IV glutathione as a proven skin-lightening treatment. Glutathione has biological relationships with pigmentation and melanogenesis, but evidence for intravenous cosmetic skin lightening remains limited. If hyperpigmentation is your primary concern, we generally prefer to evaluate and treat the pigmentation directly.
What if my main concern is melasma or dark spots?
Tell us. That is valuable information because you may have more targeted options. Depending on your skin type and the cause of pigmentation, customized skincare, chemical peels, MOXI and other pigment-directed treatments may be considered.
Will I feel different afterward?
Maybe, but not necessarily. Some patients report subjective changes after wellness treatments while others notice nothing immediately. Individual experience varies, and an immediate sensation is not a reliable measure of whether treatment was administered appropriately.
Does glutathione detox my body?
Glutathione participates in normal cellular antioxidant and metabolic pathways. We avoid describing an IV treatment as a general "detox" or suggesting that it removes unspecified toxins from the body.
Is glutathione safe?
Intravenous treatment is not risk-free. Potential risks include bruising, discomfort, vein irritation, infection, allergic or hypersensitivity reactions and other adverse effects. Published literature also raises concerns about using intravenous glutathione specifically as a cosmetic skin-lightening treatment. Appropriate clinical assessment and administration matter.
Who should not receive glutathione?
Candidacy depends on medical history, medications, allergies, current symptoms and other clinical factors. Treatment may be deferred when a patient has fever, active vomiting, abnormal vital signs, acute illness or another concern requiring medical evaluation.
Can I come in if I am sick or dehydrated?
Bolus Med Spa is not a sick clinic. We do not use wellness IV services as a substitute for urgent medical evaluation. Patients with fever, active vomiting, concerning symptoms or abnormal vital signs may be referred to urgent care or another appropriate medical setting rather than treated.
Do you offer mobile glutathione treatments?
No. Bolus does not offer standalone mobile IV therapy, glutathione house calls or on-demand mobile wellness treatment. Off-site services may only be considered as part of select approved Bolus Group Treatments or organized events.
How much does glutathione cost?
A 1 gram glutathione treatment is $150. A 2 gram glutathione treatment is $200. Clinical assessment and screening are included as part of the appointment.
Do you accept insurance?
No. Bolus Med Spa does not accept or bill insurance for treatments, procedures, products or services. HSA and FSA cards may be accepted when permitted by the patient's plan. Bolus does not obtain prior authorizations or complete insurance, HSA or FSA reimbursement paperwork. Itemized receipts with appropriate ICD-10 or CPT information may be provided when applicable. Custom letters, emails, forms or other administrative correspondence are subject to a $50 administrative fee.
Interested in glutathione?
Start with realistic expectations.
Glutathione has legitimate antioxidant biology. At Bolus, treatment is clinician-administered with appropriate screening while we remain clear about the limitations of cosmetic and wellness claims.
