Sciton Contour TRL is a highly customizable 2940-nm Er:YAG deep laser resurfacing treatment designed for significant wrinkles, advanced texture, photodamage and selected scars. Treatment depth and thermal effect are individualized around the skin—not selected from a preset menu.
Deep TRL resurfacing allows the treatment depth and residual thermal effect to be selected independently, creating a highly customizable full-field resurfacing treatment.
This is not maintenance resurfacing.
Deep laser resurfacing is considered when the objective extends beyond brightening, mild texture refinement or routine skin maintenance.
Contour TRL uses the same highly water-absorptive 2940-nm Er:YAG wavelength used throughout Sciton's resurfacing platform, but treatment can be taken substantially deeper and customized by region.
That makes TRL appropriate for selected patients with deeper wrinkles, etched lines, advanced sun damage, significant surface irregularity or scar-related texture where lighter resurfacing may not provide enough correction.
Built for more established damage.
The treatment plan depends on what is creating the visible problem—not simply how old the skin is.
Perioral lines, deeper facial rhytids and established surface creasing may require more aggressive resurfacing than lighter fractional treatments can provide.
Significant roughness, weathered texture and more advanced sun-related surface damage may benefit from deeper controlled resurfacing.
Deep resurfacing may improve selected scar-related surface irregularity, but tethering, focal defects and volume loss often require additional scar-specific procedures.
Depth is not one number.
Different areas of the same face may require very different resurfacing strategies.
The upper lip, lower face, cheeks, periocular skin and scarred areas do not necessarily require identical depth or thermal effect.
TRL allows the provider to determine how much tissue is ablated rather than treating every patient with a single predetermined resurfacing level.
Ablation and coagulation are related but distinct treatment variables. The thermal component can be selected according to the desired tissue effect.
Erbium gives us precision at the water target.
Skin contains water. The 2940-nm Er:YAG wavelength is strongly absorbed by water, making it highly efficient for precise tissue ablation.
Precise ablation.
Highly efficient absorption allows tissue to be removed in a controlled manner, which is fundamental when performing full-field laser resurfacing.
Independent coagulation.
Sciton TRL technology allows ablation depth and coagulation to be adjusted independently rather than forcing every treatment into one fixed tissue effect.
Different levels of correction.
More depth is not automatically better. The treatment should match the problem and the amount of recovery you are prepared to accept.

The recovery is part of the treatment.
Deep ablative resurfacing should be planned around healing, aftercare and time away from normal social activity.
This is a substantially different recovery experience from MOXI, HALO or superficial Er:YAG resurfacing. Treatment depth, coagulation, area treated and individual healing response can change the recovery timeline.
Swelling, redness, warmth, oozing or crusting can occur during the initial healing period. Detailed wound care is required.
New surface skin forms as the treated area heals. Skin remains fragile and requires careful protection.
Pinkness and sensitivity may remain after the initial social downtime. Improvement continues as the skin remodels over the following months.
Recovery is individualized. Two to four weeks represents a general planning window for deeper resurfacing rather than a guaranteed healing time. Persistent erythema or color changes may last longer.
Deep resurfacing starts before treatment day.
Candidacy, pretreatment and recovery planning are more important as resurfacing intensity increases.
Before treatment.
- Review medications, medical history and prior healing complications.
- Evaluate recent sun exposure, pigment risk and baseline skin condition.
- Determine whether antiviral or other pretreatment medication is clinically appropriate.
- Establish a skincare and barrier-preparation plan when needed.
- Plan transportation, comfort management and recovery support.
After treatment.
- Follow the prescribed wound-care protocol exactly.
- Avoid picking, peeling or disrupting healing tissue.
- Protect treated skin from direct and indirect ultraviolet exposure.
- Resume active skincare only when clinically cleared.
- Attend scheduled follow-up so healing can be assessed.
Deep resurfacing is a treatment plan.
The laser is only one component of a comprehensive corrective strategy.
Scar architecture matters.
Rolling, tethered, boxcar and narrow deep scars may require different interventions. Subcision, focal scar procedures or volume restoration may be needed in addition to resurfacing.
Different facial regions may need different depths.
Perioral wrinkles, cheeks, eyelid regions and scarred areas may be treated differently during the same overall treatment plan.
Pigment and redness may require another technology.
BBL, MOXI or another modality may be incorporated before or after resurfacing when discoloration is a separate treatment target.
Comfort and aftercare change with intensity.
Deeper treatment may require a more involved anesthesia or comfort plan, additional medications, enhanced aftercare and closer follow-up.
Deep TRL resurfacing is consultation-based.
We do not publish a single price for deep Er:YAG resurfacing because the scope of treatment can vary substantially. Your treatment plan is based on the depth required, facial regions treated, scar-specific procedures, comfort or anesthesia requirements, medications, preparation, aftercare and follow-up.

What does TRL stand for?
TRL stands for Tunable Resurfacing Laser. Sciton's Contour TRL uses a 2940-nm Er:YAG laser and allows treatment depth and thermal coagulation to be customized.
Is TRL the same as an erbium laser?
TRL is a specific Sciton Er:YAG resurfacing technology. It uses the 2940-nm erbium wavelength while allowing highly customizable control over ablation depth and thermal effect.
How is deep TRL different from Arctic resurfacing?
Arctic is positioned as a superficial resurfacing and polishing treatment. Deep TRL is intended for substantially greater correction and may reach far deeper treatment levels with a correspondingly longer recovery.
How is TRL different from HALO?
HALO is fractional hybrid resurfacing, meaning only portions of the skin are treated within the treatment pattern. Deep Contour TRL can perform full-field ablative resurfacing when more aggressive correction is appropriate.
Is TRL the same as CO₂ laser resurfacing?
No. Both are ablative resurfacing technologies, but TRL uses a 2940-nm Er:YAG wavelength while CO₂ uses a 10,600-nm wavelength. The wavelengths interact differently with water and produce different ablation and thermal characteristics.
How much downtime should I expect after deep TRL resurfacing?
Plan approximately two to four weeks of significant visible recovery for deeper resurfacing. The exact timeline depends on treatment depth, coagulation, area treated and individual healing response. Pinkness may persist beyond the initial recovery period.
Can deep Er:YAG resurfacing treat acne scars?
It may improve selected acne-scar texture, but scars are not all structurally the same. Tethered scars, ice-pick-type defects, boxcar scars and volume loss may require additional procedures rather than resurfacing alone.
How many deep TRL treatments will I need?
Deep resurfacing is often approached differently from a routine treatment series. The number of procedures depends on the degree of damage, treatment intensity, healing response and the desired endpoint.
Why isn't deep TRL pricing published?
Treatment scope can vary significantly. Depth, regions treated, scar procedures, anesthesia or comfort management, medications, preparation, aftercare and follow-up all influence the final treatment plan.
Is deep laser resurfacing appropriate for every skin tone?
No resurfacing treatment should be selected based on skin tone alone. Pigment history, Fitzpatrick type, prior reactions, recent sun exposure, treatment intensity and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation risk must be evaluated before deep resurfacing.
