Biostimulator treatments are selected when the goal is to support collagen, skin quality and gradual improvement over time rather than simply adding immediate volume with hyaluronic acid filler.
At Bolus Med Spa, Sculptra® is our primary facial biostimulator. Radiesse® is used more selectively, including for hands, décolleté/chest and other appropriate treatment plans.
HA filler is more immediate: we place it and you can see the contour. Biostimulation is more like contributing to a 401(k)—you invest now for changes that develop over time.
Skin, facial structure, movement, volume and collagen all change differently. A thoughtful plan may combine biostimulation with dermal filler, wrinkle relaxers, lasers, medical-grade skincare or other treatments when appropriate.
They are not the same thing.

HA Dermal Filler
Hyaluronic acid filler physically adds volume where it is placed. It is useful when we want to enhance shape, projection, contour or proportion and see that structural change right away.

We don't treat these products as interchangeable. The treatment area, tissue quality, desired timeline and clinical goal determine which tool makes sense.
Sculptra®
Sculptra is our primary facial biostimulator when the goal is longer-term collagen stimulation and gradual volume restoration. Rather than creating an immediately “filled” look, Sculptra works progressively as your body builds new collagen.
- 2–3 initial treatment sessions are generally planned, usually about 6–8 weeks apart
- A commonly used starting guideline is approximately one vial per decade of life—but this is only a starting point, not a prescription
- Your actual vial count is tailored to your anatomy, degree of volume loss, skin quality, previous treatment and goals
- Results can last up to approximately 2 years; after the initial correction, smaller yearly booster treatments may help nurture the result and keep pace with ongoing aging
Radiesse®
Radiesse is a calcium hydroxylapatite injectable that can be used differently depending on the treatment plan. At Bolus, we use it more selectively than Sculptra.
- Hands: volume loss and aging appearance
- Décolleté/chest: selected skin-quality treatment using the appropriate dilution
- Selected facial and jawline applications when appropriate
- Selected neck skin-quality treatment may be used off-label after individualized assessment
How do we choose?
We don't choose based on which product is “better.” We choose the tool that makes the most sense for the area, your anatomy and what you want to improve.
Sculptra®
Our primary facial biostimulator. We generally reach for Sculptra when the goal is gradual, broader facial collagen support and a long-term approach to facial aging.
Radiesse®
Our more selective tool. We use Radiesse especially for hands, chest/décolleté and selected facial, jawline or skin-quality applications when its properties make it the better choice.
The assessment matters. Product, amount and treatment sequence are chosen after we assess your anatomy, discuss your goals and tailor the plan to you.
Biostimulation is a process, not an instant reveal.
We set that expectation before treatment. The plan is built around gradual change and reassessment.

For Sculptra especially, we prefer to think in terms of a treatment series followed by reassessment, rather than promising that one vial or one visit will create a finished result.

Biostimulators require a different commitment than HA filler.
Injection-related effects can include swelling, bruising, redness, tenderness and temporary asymmetry. Depending on the product, other potential complications can include nodules, inflammatory reactions, infection, vascular injury and unwanted cosmetic results.
Hyaluronidase acts on hyaluronic acid. Sculptra and Radiesse are different materials, so product selection and treatment planning matter.
Sculptra: U.S. FDA labeling includes correction of fine lines and wrinkles in the cheek region in immune-competent adults, in addition to prior facial indications. Other aesthetic treatment patterns may be off-label.
Radiesse: U.S. FDA-cleared indications include selected facial wrinkles/folds, hand augmentation, jawline contouring with Radiesse (+), and décolleté wrinkles with the specified 1:2 dilution protocol. Other treatment areas, including the neck, may be off-label.
Before treatment, we review whether the proposed use is appropriate for you, expected benefits, alternatives, risks and whether the treatment is being used within or outside a labeled indication.

What is a biostimulator?
A biostimulator is an injectable used when part of the treatment goal is to encourage a longer-term tissue response rather than simply place immediate HA volume. Different products work differently, which is why the specific product matters.
Is Sculptra the same as filler?
Not in the way most patients mean “filler.” HA filler physically adds immediate gel volume. Sculptra is used for a gradual collagen-focused treatment strategy, so results build over time.
How many Sculptra treatments will I need?
There is no universal number. The plan depends on anatomy, age-related change, previous treatment and the result you are trying to achieve. We usually think in terms of a series followed by reassessment rather than promising a one-visit result.
How much does Sculptra cost?
Sculptra is $950 per vial at standard pricing. The total treatment investment depends on how many vials are included in your plan and whether treatment is staged over multiple visits.
How much does Radiesse cost?
Radiesse is $950 per syringe at standard pricing. The number of syringes and treatment approach depend on the area and treatment goal.
Why does Bolus use more Sculptra than Radiesse?
Sculptra is our primary facial biostimulator because it fits many of the gradual, natural facial treatment plans we build. Radiesse remains an important tool, but we use it more selectively based on treatment area and objective.
Can Sculptra or Radiesse be dissolved?
Not with hyaluronidase the way HA filler can. Sculptra and Radiesse are different materials, which is one reason patient selection, product choice and conservative planning are important.
Can biostimulators be combined with filler or Botox?
Yes, when clinically appropriate. They address different components of facial aging. A plan may combine biostimulation with HA filler, wrinkle relaxers, lasers or skincare rather than asking one treatment to do everything.
