B12 Shots + MIC /
Lipotropic Injections

Energy. Nutrient support. Metabolism. Without the hype.

B12 shots, MIC B12 injections and lipotropic injections are commonly requested for energy, nutrient support and metabolism. At Bolus Med Spa in Elkridge, Maryland, these treatments are clinician-administered after appropriate assessment with clear guidance about what they can and cannot realistically accomplish.

These ingredients participate in real biochemical pathways. That does not make them magic fat-burning injections. We would rather explain the science.

What Is Actually In The Shot?

B12. Methionine. Inositol. Choline.

B12 is an essential vitamin involved in neurologic function, red blood cell formation, DNA synthesis and specific metabolic reactions.

MIC commonly refers to methionine, inositol and choline.

Lipotropic or Lipo injections may combine these ingredients with B vitamins or other nutrients. Formulations vary, which is why the ingredient list matters more than the marketing name.

B12 Shots Maryland

What does vitamin B12 actually do?

Vitamin B12 is not simply an energy shot. It is an essential micronutrient involved in several fundamental biochemical processes.

Red Blood Cells

B12 is required for normal red blood cell formation. Deficiency can contribute to megaloblastic anemia and fatigue.

Nervous System

B12 is required for development, myelination and normal function of the central nervous system.

DNA Synthesis

B12 participates in biochemical pathways required for normal DNA synthesis and cellular function.

Metabolism

B12 serves as a cofactor for enzymes involved in methionine metabolism and conversion of methylmalonyl-CoA to succinyl-CoA.

Does that mean B12 automatically gives you energy?

No. B12 participates in normal energy metabolism, but it is not a stimulant. Correcting a B12 deficiency can be clinically important and may improve deficiency-related symptoms. In people who already have adequate B12 status, supplementation has not been shown to reliably improve athletic performance or endurance.

MIC Injections Maryland

MIC explained at the cellular level.

MIC stands for methionine, inositol and choline. Each ingredient participates in metabolism differently.

M - Methionine

Methylation + Cellular Metabolism

Methionine is an essential amino acid and precursor to S-adenosylmethionine, commonly called SAM.

SAM is one of the body's major methyl donors and participates in methylation reactions involving DNA, RNA, proteins and lipids.

Methionine metabolism also connects with pathways involved in cysteine and glutathione production and cellular redox balance.

I - Inositol

Insulin Signaling + Metabolic Health

Inositol compounds participate in cellular signaling pathways, including pathways involved in insulin action.

Human randomized trials and meta-analyses suggest that inositol supplementation can improve several measures of glucose regulation and insulin sensitivity in selected populations.

Importantly, improvement in metabolic markers does not automatically translate into substantial weight loss.

C - Choline

Cell Membranes + Lipid Transport

Choline is an essential nutrient used to produce phosphatidylcholine and sphingomyelin, important components of cell membranes.

It also contributes to methyl-group metabolism, cell signaling and production of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine.

Choline plays a particularly important role in normal lipid transport from the liver.

The Combination

Real Biology. Limited Injection-Specific Evidence.

There is strong evidence that the individual nutrients participate in important metabolic pathways.

That is different from demonstrating that a combined MIC injection increases basal metabolic rate, burns body fat or produces clinically meaningful weight loss.

We make that distinction because patients deserve to know the difference.

Inositol + PCOS / PMOS

Why myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol get attention in PCOS.

PCOS is closely associated with insulin resistance and compensatory hyperinsulinemia in many patients. Myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol participate in insulin-related signaling and have been studied as nutritional supplements in women with PCOS.

What do the international guidelines say?

The 2023 International Evidence-based PCOS Guideline states that inositol in any form may be considered based on individual preferences and values, with potential improvement in metabolic measures and limited apparent harm.

However, the guideline also states that specific types, doses or combinations of inositol cannot currently be recommended because the quality of evidence is insufficient.

For infertility treatment specifically, the guideline considers inositol experimental because effects on ovulation, clinical pregnancy and live birth remain uncertain.

REVIEW THE PCOS GUIDELINE
Important distinction: the PCOS studies above evaluate oral myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol supplementation. They should not be interpreted as evidence that an injectable MIC formulation produces the same PCOS outcomes. Bolus separates evidence about an individual nutrient or oral supplement from claims about a compounded injection.
Lipotropic Injections Maryland

So what does lipotropic actually mean?

The word sounds like a fat-burning medication. That is not what it means.

Lipid Metabolism

Lipotropic nutrients participate in biochemical processes involving fats and lipid transport. Choline, for example, is required for normal transport of lipids from the liver.

Cellular Metabolism

Methionine, choline and inositol participate in different metabolic pathways involving methylation, cellular signaling, membranes, insulin action and lipid handling.

Not A Fat-Burning Drug

Participation in lipid metabolism does not mean a lipotropic injection directly burns stored body fat. Bolus does not market MIC or Lipo injections as stand-alone weight-loss medications.

Clinical Perspective

Metabolism is more complicated than one injection.

Energy regulation and metabolic health involve nutrition, muscle mass, sleep, insulin sensitivity, hormones, thyroid function, medications, activity and many other physiologic systems.

A nutrient can participate in metabolism without being a metabolism booster.

Our position is simple.

If correcting a deficiency or providing a nutrient improves a biochemical pathway that was limited by inadequate nutrient availability, that is meaningful physiology.

But supplying more of a nutrient when the body already has adequate availability does not necessarily make that pathway work faster.

That is why Bolus focuses on appropriate assessment, realistic expectations and evidence rather than promising that an injection will supercharge metabolism.

Not Sure What You Actually Need?

Start with the goal, not the injection.

Fatigue, poor exercise recovery and low energy can have many causes. A wellness injection should never replace appropriate medical evaluation when symptoms suggest something more significant.

Clinical Research + Evidence

Do not take our word for it. Read the science.

The biology of these nutrients is well established. The evidence supporting every wellness marketing claim is not.

REVIEW THE GUIDELINE
B12 + MIC / Lipotropic Injection FAQs

Common questions. Clear answers.

What does a B12 shot actually do?

Vitamin B12 is required for normal red blood cell formation, neurologic function, DNA synthesis and specific metabolic reactions. B12 treatment can be particularly important when deficiency or impaired absorption is present.

Will a B12 shot give me energy?

Possibly, but not everyone feels a noticeable difference. B12 is not a stimulant. Correcting deficiency may improve deficiency-related fatigue, while supplementation in someone with adequate B12 levels may produce little or no subjective change.

What does MIC stand for?

MIC generally refers to methionine, inositol and choline. Methionine participates in methylation and one-carbon metabolism, inositol participates in cellular signaling including insulin-related pathways, and choline is important for cell membranes, neurotransmitter production and lipid transport.

Do MIC injections boost metabolism?

That phrase can be misleading. MIC ingredients participate in normal metabolic processes, but that does not prove that an MIC injection increases basal metabolic rate. Bolus prefers to explain the actual biochemical roles rather than promise a metabolism boost.

Are lipotropic injections fat burners?

No. The term lipotropic refers to nutrients involved in aspects of lipid metabolism or transport. Participation in lipid metabolism does not mean an injection directly burns stored body fat.

Are MIC or lipotropic injections the same as skinny shots?

The term skinny shot is sometimes used in wellness marketing for nutrient-based injections containing B12, MIC or other lipotropic ingredients. Bolus does not characterize these injections as weight-loss medications and does not promise weight loss from them.

Does inositol have real clinical research?

Yes. Randomized trials and meta-analyses have reported improvements in some measures of insulin sensitivity, glucose regulation and lipid metabolism in selected populations. The evidence is stronger for some metabolic markers than for meaningful weight loss, and most studies evaluate oral supplementation rather than MIC injections specifically.

What is the 40:1 myo-inositol to D-chiro-inositol ratio used for in PCOS?

A 40:1 myo-inositol to D-chiro-inositol ratio has been studied in women with PCOS. Some studies report improvements in insulin resistance, androgen-related markers and other hormonal or metabolic measures. However, the international PCOS guideline does not currently recommend one specific inositol ratio, dose or formulation because the overall quality of evidence remains limited.

Is the 40:1 PCOS evidence proof that MIC injections treat PCOS?

No. The PCOS research primarily evaluates oral myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol supplementation. It should not be extrapolated to claim that an injectable MIC formulation treats PCOS or produces the same clinical outcomes.

Why is choline included in lipotropic injections?

Choline is an essential nutrient involved in cell membrane structure, methyl-group metabolism, acetylcholine production and lipid transport. Adequate choline is particularly important for normal transport of lipids from the liver.

Do I need labs before receiving B12?

Not every wellness visit requires laboratory testing. However, persistent fatigue, neurologic symptoms, anemia, gastrointestinal disease, dietary risk factors or other clinical concerns may make laboratory evaluation appropriate.

Who administers these injections?

Treatments at Bolus Med Spa are provided following appropriate clinical assessment and are administered within our licensed medical practice.

Do you offer B12 or MIC house calls?

No. Bolus does not offer standalone mobile wellness injections or individual house calls. Selected wellness services may be incorporated into approved Bolus Group Treatments or organized events when clinically and operationally appropriate.

Do you accept insurance?

No. Bolus Med Spa does not accept or bill insurance for treatments, procedures, products or services. HSA and FSA cards may be accepted when permitted by the patient's plan. Bolus does not obtain prior authorizations or complete insurance, HSA or FSA reimbursement paperwork. Itemized receipts with applicable ICD-10 or CPT coding may be provided when appropriate. Custom letters, emails, forms or other administrative correspondence are subject to a $50 administrative fee.

What if I am sick or have abnormal vital signs?

Bolus Med Spa is not a sick clinic or urgent care. Treatment may be deferred for patients with fever, active vomiting, abnormal vital signs or symptoms requiring additional medical evaluation. When appropriate, patients will be directed to urgent care, emergency care or another appropriate medical setting.
