Everything You Need To Know About Dermal Fillers
Restore Volume And Contour With Dermal Fillers
What Are Dermal Fillers?
If you’re hoping to increase facial volume, add soft contouring smooth fine lines, and have a more vibrant and youthful look, dermal fillers are for you. Through this facial rejuvenation treatment, we inject a gel substance under the surface of the skin, resulting in a more visible, plumper look.
Dermal fillers are often injected in the face when the cheeks or temples start to sag, the lips start to lose volume, or when the jawline isn’t as defined as it once was. We can even help you out with hollowed-out eyes by bringing under‑eye dermal fillers. While these are all totally normal aging processes that occur as our body starts to produce less collagen, we don’t have to simply accept the aging process since we have dermal fillers to counter it.
How Do Dermal Fillers Work?
Dermal fillers work by adding volume back into the areas of the face where volume has decreased. This can include the face, neck, chest, hands, and even buttocks. To keep it simple, we’ll use the face as an example to show how dermal fillers work. Keep in mind Sculptra is another injectable option that you can learn about in the Sculptra section.
Think of it like this: When you’re young, your face is like a balloon that's full of air. As that balloon “ages,” air naturally starts to decrease, resulting in a more deflated appearance. Sometimes, you’ll even notice the balloon starting to get wrinkly as the air escapes. If we want to bring that balloon back to its original state, we need to add air back in.
The same goes for your face and collagen. We naturally lose collagen in our faces over time, so in order to “reinflate” and bring back that youthful appearance, we need to add a substance that will restore that plump look—dermal fillers to the rescue.
Are Dermal Fillers Safe?
Keep in mind that there are different brands and types of dermal fillers, and you’ll find the substance used is different for all of them. At our Elkridge medical spa, we only use the highest quality dermal fillers, which are all FDA‑approved. This includes the full Restylane family such as Lyft, Defyne, and KYSSE to name a few. Juvederm and Versa are additional gel fillers that are also FDA approved for injection.
In general, dermal fillers are completely safe. However, as with any injection, there is always some small risk of your body having a reaction to the substance. This is why working with a trusted medical spa that has years of experience with injections is critical. In addition, disclosing any allergies is a must when discussing dermal fillers and you should avoid fillers 30 days before or after the Covid vaccine.
Some side effects you could experience include swelling, redness, rashing, and/or bruising. While minor versions of these symptoms are common, contact us if they persist or if you become too uncomfortable. Rare, but possible is a vascular occlusion where the filler is accidentally injected into the blood vessel. This blocks the blood flow and is an emergency.
Many medspas do not talk about vascular occlusions or even post it on their website, but it is important that you are educated and avoid getting yourself into trouble. You should always make sure the provider injecting your face is trained in the reversal protocol, and MOST IMPORTANTLY make sure they have the reversal medicaiton in the office. It is best to build a long term relationship with a trusted injector/provider to ensure you get the best care before, during, and after the treatment.
